Description

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is just a few weeks away, and I am sharing a wonderful printable activity booklet for you and your children to celebrate and learn about Dr. King.

Martin Luther King Jr is an American hero. His life and work offer so many teaching opportunities to people all over the world.

Just before Martin Luther King’s birthday, I am sharing lesson ideas, resources, and a printable activity book for you to use.

You can use this material to teach children about Dr. King and his fight for civil rights for Black Americans.

Start by discussing Dr. Martin Luther King and his tremendous legacy. Define and explain segregation, racism, and the civil rights movement.

Discuss the importance of treating everyone with respect and dignity, as all people are created by God.

This MLK Day activity booklet has seven pages for children to work on.

This printable material focuses on Dr. King’s I Have a Dream speech and basic details about Dr. King’s life.

When putting this resource together, I intended for it to be used to engage children in learning about MLK and his I Have a Dream speech and not so much as stand-alone busywork that the child completes alone.

I encourage you to read picture books about MLK as a part of your lessons.

The Martin Luther King Worksheets and Activity Pages Include:

Coloring page – Have young children work on this coloring page as they listen to MLK’s I have a dream speech.

Word Search – Words that relate to the life and legacy of Dr. King. Have children complete the word search and engage in discussion of the words. How do they relate to Dr. King? What are their definitions?

Fill in the blank worksheets – Children will need to listen to or read the I Have A Dream Speech to complete this activity.

I highly suggest having children listen to the speech as it is an amazing speech in both content and delivery. This speech stands out even amongst the most notable speeches in history.

Copy Work/Letter Tracing Page – Children will read and trace the preamble to the Declaration of Independence.

Mapping Comprehension Page – Children will read notable events from Dr. King’s life and in what state they took place. They will then locate the state on the US map and color it.

Here is a list of books about MLK we’ve read over the years in our homeschool. All are wonderful.

In addition to these books, we pulled out or copy of the United States Constitution and The Declaration of Independence when learning about King’s I Have a Dream Speech. King references the United States Declaration of Independence in his speech.

I Have a Dream Book & CD – A brilliantly illustrated picture book of MLK’s monumental speech.
